How to fix Media Center Remote buttons 4 Months, 4 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I have had a GYR3101US remote for a couple of years now.

All Modes buttons now consistently need hard and long press to work.
I have one button that does not work at all (setup menu) it does not send any signal (no light coming up when I press.
The down arrow key now needs hard and long press to work too in all modes (IR and RF)
The worse is when I press the TV mode button sometimes it activates “Aux” mode, sometime all the mode buttons flash and “Aux” gets activated, and sometimes it works…

I tried new batteries with no success, and I also tried a complete reset, batteries off for an hour, clear / reset of each mode, and a fresh reprogramming, but the problem persists

Support mentionned that opening the remote, cleaning the carbon pads, and reseating the mat could help, but I am not sure on what is the best way to open the remote so I can access these.

Can someone provide the best procedure to open the remote and have access to the buttons system.

Thanks

Well I have solutions for people who experience malfunctionning keys on their Gyration remote (or other remotes for that matter).

First to open the remote you need to unscrew the small screw under the batteries. Then with a small screwdriver or plastic tool, open up the remote from the middle of the long side, and work your way around.

Now for the malfunctionning key, the problem is most likely because the conductive carbon layer that coats the black silicon keys has worn out. You cannot see it as it is black on black, but the lack of conductivity is what causes the keys to badly work, or stop working all together.

There are two ways to fix the problem.
1) The best long term way is to use a Rubber Keypad Repair kit to recoat the keys. See link here: www.ehow.com/how_5205464_fix-remotes-button-wont-work.html
Important to note, the product requires mixing two components, but you dont need to mix all of it at once. It does require at least one day to dry (preferably 3).

2) For a single or couple of buttons, you can also do a quick instant fix using aluminium foil and double sided tape. See link here: minidiy.blogspot.com/2008/02/repair-remo...ulty-buttons-in.html

Once the conductivity is restored, the keys work like new...
